Apatheia and Stabilitas: Paths to Joy

Recent years has seen multitudes of westerners turning to a combination of Yoga, Buddhism, and other eastern religious philosophical practices together with scientific research in brain and hormone observations in search of happiness, contentment, fulfillment, and peace. These states are sought after like goods to be earned, and the “work” that must be put in involves meditating with the body, various Zen practices, and generally healthy lifestyles. Time magazine released a special edition with the cover title, “The Science of Happiness.” Several of the articles relate happiness to healthy brain states which can be fostered by practices like Yoga stretching, exercise, healthy eating, brain teasers and puzzles, finding fulfilling work, etc. etc. etc.
